hi...have been using jamcast now for about 3 weeks and have been very impressed with it...i am using it to stream flac files from my pc win 7 to my streamium....some of the files i have been streaming have been 24 bit flac files...my question is...is jamcast actually streaming it in this high quality to the streamium ?....it sounds great when playing on the streamium...just surprized that a better than cd quality sound can be streamed like this..?..thanks

Hello,

Thanks for stopping by, glad you've been enjoying Jamcast so far!

Jamcast makes decisions on whether it should stream the track to the device as-is or transcode it on-the-fly to another format for compatibility's sake. In the case of your 24-bit FLAC files to the Streamium device, my guess is that the audio it being converted to 16-bit LPCM, or possibly even to 320kbps MP3.

Jamcast writes much detail to medialog.txt about how tracks are handled, whether they are transcoded and to what format. You also have control over these decisions via Device Profiles. If you'd like, paste your medialog.txt (located in the Jamcast installation directory) to http://pastebin.com and share it here so we can look together and know for sure exactly what's happening.

Hope this helps!

You're welcome.

So I see you're using the Virtual Soundcard to get your FLAC audio over to the Streamium. The audio goes thru 2 conversions along the way, one is the decoding done by your audio player and then another is done by Jamcast before sending to the device. The final format is 16-bit PCM audio sampled at 44.1kHz.

So you do lose the 24-bit samples in this process (likely by the FLAC decoder as audio is handed off to Windows), but otherwise it's a lossless operation. To your ears, you very well may not notice the difference from the original source audio.

Did you know that you can browse/play your FLAC files directly from the Streamium? Jamcast will do the decoding for you, and the output format will be the same 16-bit PCM audio you're getting now.

Thanks!

hi again...thanks for that...so it is still lossless...thats what i thought as it sounds better than mp3 quality to my ears..so there is no way to play 24 bit files to the streamium ?...not that it matters that much...i am very happy with the sound quality.....one more question....are the settings from jamcast to my streamium as they should be..?....thanks for your help...
